“Turnitin provides instructors with the tools to engage students in the writing process, provide personalized feedback, and assess student progress over time. Turnitin is used by more than 26 million students at 15,000 institutions in 140 countries.” – Turnitin.com

Turnitin is used in varying degrees by HE and FE institutes around the world, with the system offering more than just a plagiarism checking service.

Tutors create a submission area for students to submit their work, with flexible metrics for submission; inc deadline date, word count and plagiarism checks to name a few. Students then submit their work for grading via the Turnitin submission service. The system will scan the students work for its source and highlight work that is not original, providing an originality report.

Tutors can then provide feedback to the student using drag and drop comments or voice comments, whilst also providing a final grade where necessary. As tutors use the system more they can create useful phrases to assist the marking of work. Throughout the marking process students have access to their work and are able to see comments given.

Once marked, tutors can download the work with their comments attached or download a grade sheet for the class.
